Photo: Sunset at Downtown Disney

Sunset at Downtown Disney

During our July trip to Cocoa Beach, we drove over to Walt Disney World to do some shopping at Downtown Disney one evening. It was a nice little getaway during our getaway, and we had a good time doing it.

And on top of that, there was a great sunset in the evening, seen across the waters of the lake. The sky was spectacular, as you can see. You can also see Fulton’s Crab House, the Characters in Flight Balloon (which wasn’t flying at the time), and some of the cranes and other construction pieces currently being used to change Downtown Disney into Disney Springs.

Interestingly, after I had worked on this photo but before I had posted it, a friend had posted something about how Fulton’s Crab House used to be the Empress Lilly Riverboat. That brought to mind  the following photo:

Empress Lilly

In this view from 1987, you can see the Empress Lilly as she used to be, looking more like an actual riverboat before Fulton’s moved in. The big Fulton’s sign hadn’t been added yet, and the riverboat still had a paddle wheel and smoke stacks. All of those were for some reason removed. Maybe Fulton’s liked the location better than the riverboat theme.

Here is one more photo showing how things were, this time from 1989:

Ah, the good old days.
