Sands Upon the Seashore

Sands Upon the Seashore at Cocoa Beach, Florida

The sand fills the beach at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida. How many grains of sand are on the beach? Is there even any way to count them all? I am sure that in today’s modern technical world, there is a way to estimate it, but who would really, really want to know the exact number, if we could even get our minds around it?

It reminds me of an old song we sing in church sometimes, “Father of Mercies” by Frederic Faber:

Father of Mercies, day by day
My love to Thee grows more and more;
Thy gifts are strewn upon my way
Like sands upon the great seashore.

Except for the fact that no one really says “strewn” any more, the message is pretty clear. God’s blessings for us are more numerable than the sands upon the seashore.

And that’s a lot.
