Walking Through the Woods

Walking through the woods

This past Saturday was a beautiful day. Of course, because it was January, it was still relatively cool outside, although it wasn’t completely cold. And the sun was out, which seems like a rarity around here, especially in January. So we made the most of it by going for a walk in the woods.

We have a few acres of woods around our house, but we don’t go through them all that often. In the summer, everything is overgrown, making it difficult to get into the woods without a machete or a chainsaw, and carrying one of those around makes for unpleasant walking. And on top of that, there is always lots of poison ivy. And probably some snakes, too.

During the winter, it is usually too cold to get out and do much of anything. And we aren’t exactly what you would call cold-weather people, preferring to stay inside where it is warm. So the woods go largely ignored most of the time.

Every now and then, however, we will get a day like Saturday was, a day that is perfect for getting out for a while without the threat of poison ivy and snakes. So we took advantage of it.

Of course, we saw lots of trees. Some, like the ones in the foreground above, had been blown over by the wind at some point, but there were still plenty of other trees still upright, too. We didn’t see any wildlife, other than a few birds, but we saw lots of tracks. Definitely some deer, perhaps some bobcat, and maybe coyote, or just a really lost dog.

It was a fun time to be out exploring. Hopefully, it won’t be all that long before we can do it again.
