Spaceship Earth at Epcot

Spaceship Earth in Future World at Epcot in Walt Disney World.

Because you never can have too many photos of Spaceship Earth at Epcot. Really. How could you get tired of seeing that big round thing with all the triangles on it?

Of course, Spaceship Earth is instantly recognizable as the symbol of EPCOT Center, or Epcot, as the park is now known. Obviously, the Imagineers wanted to go with something big, bold, and eye-catching when they were designing the park, and they succeeded. I am glad that they didn’t just go with a big sphere, but instead, they covered it with all the triangle panels. Those triangles add interest to the sphere by reflecting light in different ways, especially at night when Spaceship Earth is illuminated with different colors of light.

However, I do sometimes wonder: If Spaceship Earth were to break free from its supports, how far would it roll before it came to a stop? Because there isn’t much that could stop a big 18-story rolling ball. Food for thought. Let’s just hope those supports hold.
