Going Down from the Mound

Laura and Jaylin make their way down the steps from the observation deck on the top of Sauls’ Mound at Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Area in Tennessee.

The hike to the top of Sauls’ Mound is a bit strenuous at times, because it is quite a way up there. After all, 73 feet would be the equivalent of a 7-story building. And when was the last time you climbed up seven flights of stairs? Admit it - you took the elevator, didn’t you? At Pinson Mounds, there is no elevator up to the top of the mound, so if you want to go to the top, you have to walk. Unless, of course, you can find someone to carry you. Which I couldn’t.

But after you are finished taking in the great views, going back down from Sauls’ Mound is quite easy. No need to stop and rest on the way down, as there was on the way up. In fact, for those daredevil types, it would even be tempting to forget the steps and just roll your way down.

But I wouldn’t advise that. And I am guessing that the park rangers wouldn’t think to highly of it, either.
