Nice to see Cedar Point might get more of their locomotives running.

The REAL news is what came out on the truck that's taking the Forney back to Ohio, but we can't talk about that just yet.

They could possibly try the black flying DRGW double scheme on the forney and give it an electric visor headlight and tapered stack. What happened to the railroad at great america anyway. I never knew that CGA had a railroad at one time, could somebody please tell me where it went?

The Great America Scenic Railway was one of the original attractions at the Great America in CA and it opened with the park in 1976. It was closed and then removed in 1999, right after Stealth opened. Note that Stealth's construction was not the cause for its removal. The Vekoma Flying Dutchman coaster operated just fine with the trains underneath it and in fact Paramount Parks paid a rather large sum to have its support structure designed specifically to allow the trains to pass underneath. (According to Vekoma's David Vatcher whom I chatted with at Stealth's media day.) I snapped several photos of the train slowly rolling underneath Stealth after the coaster was in operation during a normal operating day.

The Custom Fabricators trains and cars went to Florida after their removal from Great America. They appeared on the DF Barnhardt website for sale for quite some time but then they disappeared. I don't know if they were sold and I don't know who in Florida had owned them.

I have a few photos of the trains both in the park and when they were up for sale in Florida. I'd love to also know what happened to them.

The red train (listed on Barnhardt) was sold to another party and Florida and ended up at this place. The green one, complete with the second set of cars, are in the hands of a private collector near Georgetown, CA, and share company in the back 40 with an ex-Astroworld Harpur and other miscellaneous pieces of narrow gauge equipment.

What gauge are those trains... the trains on the Great America Scenic Railway out here in Illinois seem to be 3ft? but I don't know?
Were they ever steam at one time and then converted (shudder) to diesel?

I actually considered buying the red train at one time. I went over to Great America after they shut down the railroad to inspect them. They told me that the locomotives were at one time true steam engines, but that they had been converted to diesel hydraulic by Custom Fabricators. I don't know if any of that was true, but they seemed sure of it.

The loco's themselves weren't too bad, apart from the hideous headlamps, but the tenders were... well, there aren't any polite words to describe them. The "wood load" was a fence made of dowels that went straight up from the sides of the tender.

Anyway, I seem to recall that they were 3' gauge.

Needless to say, I didn't buy it. Funny thing, a few months later I was sitting in my office that faced highway 680. What should roll by on the freeway on flatbed trailers but the red engine followed by a few of the coaches.

Thanks guys for filling in the blanks.

Gayle Ando's approval for the removal of the train was not one that I was fond of and, from what I've heard from someone that knew her personally, was one that she regretted later on.
