Memphis

photos taken February 2005

Today we take a quick look around downtown Memphis and the Mississippi River. Part of the purpose of these photos was to test out a new digital camera, an Olympus C-765UZ. Did it pass the test?

Here is a look at some of the buildings of downtown Memphis. Just a nice general overview shot, nothing spectacular here. See the trolley in the center of the picture?

Next is a shot of one of the trolleys that run through the downtown area. This was a test of the 10x optical zoom of the camera. The above picture was the telephoto version, and this picture is zoomed in on the trolley. Both pictures were taken from the same location.

This is a look at the Mississippi River and one of its channels that runs along Mud Island, the southern tip of which can be seen to the right of the picture.

Several different riverboats are available for river cruises on the Mississippi, such as the Memphis Queen II, in the foreground. It has been several years since I have been on one, but it was a fun time.

Here is a view of Mud Island, along with the monorail track running to the Island. Mud Island opened in the early 1980s as a "river park" with a museum and a scale model of the entire Mississippi River. It never quite caught on like they thought it would, though. The monorail is a suspended type from the bottom of the track. The upper portion is a walkway, in case you don't want to ride the monorail. The monorail was used in a climactic chase scene in the Tom Cruise movie The Firm, which used many Memphis landmarks.

Here is the distinctive Hernando de Soto bridge crossing the Mississippi River between Memphis and West Memphis, Arkansas. Some of the Mud Island facilities are in the foreground, including the tent/dome that used to house the Memphis Belle World War II bomber.

In the background of this picture is the Pyramid arena. The Pyramid was built with much fanfare, opening in the early 1990s. But with the opening of the new FedEx Forum last year (the new home of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA team), not much is happening any more at the Pyramid. Right now it faces an uncertain future.

A look back at a portion of the Memphis skyline, with the Mud Island monorail track in the foreground. There haven't been many new, tall buildings built in downtown Memphis for many years. Many of the existing buildings have some interesting history behind them, especially the older ones. I was also experimenting with the exposure controls in this shot.
