A Haunted House for Halloween
Eerie!
Bats fly around a Haunted House under a full moon in this drawing from Steve’s Sketchbook. After all, Halloween is just around the corner.
You can just imagine the kinds of haunts that haunt this haunted house. In fact, you will have to imagine the haunts, because I did not draw them, just the house. I thought it would be fun to draw something like this, as I was thinking of what sort of things to draw for Halloween besides the normal pumpkins. See some past Halloween drawings, and some other Halloween posts, here.
This house was inspired by the homes of people like the Addams Family and the Munsters. But I tried to make it my own and not copy theirs while keeping that same sort of feel.
This house actually started out looking a little less haunted than what you see here. At first, it was more of just a plain house. When I showed it to Laura, she suggested adding things like the railings, the spider webs, the torn curtains and broken shutters, and the rocking chair on the porch. She also suggested the bats, which were a perfect addition. That made an ordinary house look even more like the haunted house that I had in mind. I should use her as my art director more often! Plus, I added the pumpkin from a recent post in front of the house, just for more decoration.

About the Artwork
This haunted house artwork is not exactly what you would call an architectural rendering. I did use more straight lines than freehand lines in Procreate when I was drawing this, but I did not try to make it “perfect”. The windows are all different sizes and do not line up in straight lines. The lines, while straight, are not exactly parallel, either. I think that gives it just a bit more comic character, which is good with me.
Also, instead of black lines for the outline of the house, I used a very dark red line. That softened it up a little more and works well with the purple of the night sky. I think black lines would have been just a little too harsh for this nighttime scene. The red color of the lines might not be all that noticeable, so I thought it was worth mentioning.
