A Light Winter Snow

On the second day of the new year, we got some snow. It was just enough snow to be beautiful, but not enough to cause major problems. And that is the best kind of snow that there is.

The snow actually started falling on Sunday morning during the church service. But because we had been having 70 degree days right up until the day before, the ground was still warm enough that the snow was melting on the roads. So we took our time eating lunch with the Riedels, not being in a big hurry to get home.

By the time we did get home, the snow was falling harder, with big, fluffy flakes that were beautiful to see. See the video below that I shot with my phone:

Yes, that is a slow-motion video. The flakes were not falling quite that slowly. But I liked the look of it in slow motion. And no need to adjust your speakers - there is no sound with this video.

Anyway, the snow fell well into the evening. By the morning, everything looked like the photo at the beginning of this post. Snow covered the grassy areas, but not the roads. Or in this case, our gravel driveway. As I mentioned, just enough to look good without causing major problems. A cosmetic snow, if you will.

I was glad that I went outside and took a photo when I did. Later on in the day, the sun came out, and by the late afternoon, most of the sun had melted. Isn’t it interesting how quickly the weather can change?

More Winter Weather?

And yes, we did get more winter weather later on in the week. And while the threat of it was enough to close schools on Thursday, it did not look nearly as nice as the snow in this photo.

Still, that is two instances of winter weather in one week. Is that how this whole winter is going to go? I hope not. Not that I can do anything about it, of course. Except to go outside and take more photos if it does snow!

Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! - Psalm 148:8

About the Photo

As you might guess, it was cold outside. So I set the camera appropriately while I was inside, then I ran outside and took this photo. I actually took three photos, just to make sure one of them worked for me. Fortunately, it did.

I then used a little post-processing. Unlike some of my recent photos, I reduced the contrast on this one instead of increasing it, giving the photo a nice, soft, winter look which went well with the snow theme.
