Colorful Buildings at the Walt Disney World Boardwalk Resort

The old Wonderful World of Disney television show used to start with the words of the theme song, “The world is a carousel of color.” That is definitely evident here at the Walt Disney World Boardwalk Resort. Yes, the resort was created many years after they stopped using that theme song, but the words still hold true here.

Those colors really stand out in the rainy conditions that were happening when we visited the resort last summer. That is by design, however. The clever Disney folks select colors that will look good in the strong Florida sun as well as in the frequent Florida rains. Liquid sunshine, they like to call it. And since they get a lot of the liquid stuff, why not paint your buildings accordingly?

What is Color, Anyway?

Color is relative, they say. Different people see colors different ways. And some people are even colorblind so that they do not see differences between some colors. If you are colorblind, my hat is off to you. Not literally, because I did not have a hat on before I typed that. But you know what I mean.

I like the way that different colors look, and I can’t imagine not being able to see different colors. I suppose that is why I like bold colors in my photos. I may not be the best at matching colors, and I often have to run my clothing choices by Laura to make sure that they match. But I definitely do enjoy all of the different colors that are out there in the world.

But what if I am actually colorblind? What if I don’t see all of the colors that there are and I don’t know it? After all, colorblindness does not hit suddenly. It has been with you ever since birth, so that you have always seen things the same way. I would guess that most colorblind people have discovered their colorblindness somewhere along the way. But it is still something interesting to think about, right?

Are the best black and white photographers actually colorblind?

Bible Verse

You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward You will take me up in glory. Who do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You. - Psalm 73:24-25

About the photo

Most of our visits to the Walt Disney World Boardwalk over the past few years have been in the rain. But that’s okay. Cloudy skies and reflective wet surfaces are pretty cool, too. And sometimes just a bit more dramatic than a plain blue sky.

For this photo, I masked in a darker exposure from the original Raw file for the sky to bring out the clouds a bit better. After that, I did some of my normal processing with Google Nik Filters and Photoshop. And yes, I increased the color saturation slightly during all of that. But those buildings really are colorful to begin with. I just accentuated what was there.
