Great photo of the blowdown, Bob!

I want to see more photos, but that link you provided is a little wonky...

Thanks UB!

Very nice! I missed the double-header by about a year.

Bob, we're doing a "Brew and Chew" Saturday the 29th. Come on out and introduce yourself!

There are several firemen that day, so maybe I might not be able to give you a cab ride (but maybe!), but I can at least give you a tour of my "office!"

Hey there. despite being in Winston, I've never made the trip down there. I'm going to wait until #17's 5 year boiler inspection is done. what's the progress you've made so far?

Progress is slooooowwwww. We stripped the backhead appliances and have pulled the front end guts out (Steam pipes, petticoat and blast nozzle). With all-volunteer labor, it may take a while to complete the 1472. If we get any additional funding, this may get done a little faster. We'll see.

The weather looks good for the "Brew and Choo" this weekend. Trains, music, and beer, doesn't get any better!

Steve DeGaetano wrote:Out at the railroad where I volunteer (New Hope Valley Railway, Bonsal, NC), one of our members is a very accomplished photographer. He caught me last month as I was "switching over" from firing the engine on compressed air, to the steam pressure I had built up in the boiler. I do that by keeping a little puddle of oil ignited in the fire pan, and then re-lighting the fire from the burner off that. Sometimes it gets a little smoky in the cab (cough cough!).

If you want to see some great shots of our railroad, our members, and our guests enjoying themselves, you can check out the rest of the album here.
do you know the progress of #17's 5 year boiler inspection as required by the FRA?
