Imagination Station Kids On Track, Barry's Big Trains, Dave Goodson, various manufacturers, 15 children and many other volunteers spent 4 years in the design, development and building of this previous LGB 2-6-0 locomotive dedicated solely to Bobby Driscoll for his fabulous work in film for Walt Disney Studios.
Bobby was the forgotten child with a tragic history, yet the best child actor Disney ever had.
He starred in films produced by Walt Disney like, Song Of The South, So Dear To My Heart, Peter Pan and Treasure Island. He also starred on loan in films like, The Window, among many others. He also was the lead roll in, The Mousketeers.
Bobby was just 13 years old when he got a special Oscar in 1950 for his powerful performances in the thriller, The Window and the family drama, So Dear To My Heart. He quit acting in 1957 to take a straight job. Sadly, his life went downhill and in March 1968, he died penniless and alone on a cot, found by two boys in an abandoned New York tenement. He is buried in Potter's Field on nearby Hart Island.
We wanted to honor his accomplishments by naming this locomotive after him. We received a large number of requests from kids and families to name the locomotive after him but we also wanted to do so because we equally loved his films.
We felt that he was not given adequate credit for the awesome work he did and we thought his history could be shared with the children that will run this train in the years to come.
This locomotive isn't modeled after any particular Disney locomotive by any means but then again it wasn't meant to be. Plans were changed to make the locomotive resemble a Disneyland locomotive because Walt Disney loved trains and Bobby was his favorite. There is even rumors that Bobby rode on Walt's trains with Walt, but I can't verify that.
We have provided a few more photos of Bobby, his films and this locomotive. I hope it was alright for us to post this here and that this will revitalize the wonderful memories of Bobby Driscoll's short life.
