Six Gun Territory "Sam Houston"

Post by jayo »

In case you haven't heard, the "Sam Houston" engine, which was built for Six Gun Territory, and spent the better (or worse, depending on how you look at it) part of the 80's onwards displayed at the entrance to Underground Atlanta, was recently moved to the Kirby Family Farm in Williston, FL.
Here's a video:

They are gonna display it at their old SGT depot, but they ultimately plan to restore it to operating condition.

Great to hear it's going to run again someday.
I saw this engine at Atlanta years ago and long before that, I rode behind her during Six Gun Territory's final gasp as a tourist attraction in the 80s. They invited civil war re-enactors to hang around the place for a weekend (with a 'battle' in the open area right before the depot at the western town). We went to the first one but didn't go back. As I understand it, the place folded up soon afterward. I've never found any references or photos of that online, but my family still has a few pictures of that weekend.
It was a pretty well-made western town, and I was saddened to hear it all got bulldozed over. Apparently, the locomotive and depot went to the same place: http://www.ocala.com/news/20160714/six- ... amily-farm

Something about old defunct western themed amusement parks brings out the best people. When I read that story about Six Gun Territory and how its fans refuse to let it die, I couldn't help but think about the history of my own home park, Frontier Village, and how its fans keep its memory alive and well today.

I've only seen it on display at Underground Atlanta, and it always annoyed me that the headlight was missing! I'm hoping it will finally get a new one at its new home...
