A Tiki Turkey for Thanksgiving

Happy Tiki Thanksgiving!

A Tiki Turkey for Thanksgiving continues the tiki series from Steve’s Sketchbook. And this takes carving a turkey to a whole new level!

If you wonder where this came from, I had two separate thoughts. One thought was, “I should draw something for Thanksgiving because there is not that much Thanksgiving artwork out there.” Another thought was, “I have not drawn any tikis in a while.” Put them both together, and this is what you get! Yes, that is how my mind works.

I wonder if anyone has actually carved a tiki turkey before? And by that, I mean from actual wood and not just a digital drawing like this one. I am sure someone has. Surely I am not the only one who has thought of such a thing?

Also, about nomenclature (Just typing that brings back memories of my high school chemistry teacher. “People, you have to know your nomenclature!” - Dr. Bob). Anyway, is this a tiki turkey? Or is this a turkey tiki? Yes, that is something else that I wrestled with in my mind. And I decided that there was no right answer. So if turkey tiki works better for you, then that is what this is.

Thankful

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, I am thankful for many things. Not just tikis and turkeys. Or tiki turkeys. Or turkey tikis.

I am thankful for family, friends, and friends who are like family. We are surrounded by so many great people who help make life more bearable, more interesting, and more fun.

I am thankful for the physical blessings that we have that bring comfort to our lives. Many people do not have anywhere near as much as we do.

I am thankful to be able to work and earn a living. There are many who would love to be able to have a job to provide for their families.

I am thankful that I do not have to remember that chemistry nomenclature anymore. Okay, enough about chemistry for today.

And I am thankful to God, who makes all of this possible.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

About the Artwork

As usual for these Steve’s Sketchbook drawings, this one was created using the Procreate iPad app and an Apple Pencil.

I like adding different textures to these drawings instead of having them just appear “flat”. To do that, I use a wide variety of brushes in Procreate that simulate different painting brushes and drawing pens, pencils, and markers. Sometimes, things turn out a little differently than I originally intended. For example, the sky in the background almost looks like it was colored with crayons. Maybe not what I had in mind, but it does fit the style of the artwork, so I left it like it was. Because to me, it made it all even more fun.

Can’t you just imagine this drawn on manilla paper and stuck to someone’s refrigerator?
