Man With Umbrella Sketch From Steve's Sketchbook

A Sketch

A sketch of a man with an umbrella from Steve’s Sketchbook

A sketch of a man with an umbrella is the latest entry in Steve’s Sketchbook.

For a change, this art piece is actually more of a sketch when compared to the other recent pieces, living up to the Steve’s Sketchbook name. The other recent pieces have had more of a finished feel to them, while this one is just a simple sketch.

And actually, the coloring of this hides some of the original sketch lines, which I liked. You can see those in the progression animation down below.

I had no real plan in mind when I started this. I just wanted to take a little time to sketch something. Pretty quickly, I came up with a man. I then added the long coat. And then I decided that he should have an umbrella, too. It looks like he is about to go back out in the rain, ready to brave the elements with this coat and umbrella. I would also recommend a hat, but that is because I don’t have hair to help keep the rain out of my eyes. Maybe this guy is wishing that he had a hat, too.

Who can explain what the mind comes up with sometimes? Certainly not me.

Something New

I recently started a new Instagram account, @stevessketchbook. That one will be for these art-type posts, while the main @burnsland account will still have all of the photos that you know and love. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to separate the two. Maybe it will work, maybe not. Thanks to those who have already followed the new account!

Everyone has their preferences. Some like to have everything together, while others like to have separate accounts for different things. Along those same lines, some like to see drawings and photos mixed together, while others only want to see one or the other. And what works for one person might not work for another.

Sometimes it is fun to change things up, just to see what works.

Bible Verse

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. - 1 Corinthians 13:1

About the Artwork

As usual, this artwork was created using the Procreate app on my iPad. But as I mentioned above, there were a few differences for this one.

For starters, I created a paper-like background to use for this, because I did not want to just draw on the standard white background. So I used a light yellow color and layered a texture similar to paper over it. That made it seem a little more like sketching on paper. It really is not a big deal, but I liked it.

Also as mentioned above, this is more of a rough sketch than anything else. It started with a really rough version, then a cleaner version, and then some grayscale color. That that was it. No shading, no clean lines, nothing else. Just three Procreate layers. Fun and quick, which is nice sometimes.

See the progression below to get a better look at the original rough sketch.
